What is a proximity social app? How Bluetooth meeting works

Most social apps are built around search: you look up a username, follow a profile, or trade numbers. A proximity social app is built around something more human — the people who are physically near you, right now.

The simple definition

A proximity social app uses your phone's short-range radios — primarily Bluetooth — to detect other people running the same app nearby, so you can connect with someone you're actually in the same place as. It's the difference between "who can I find online?" and "who's around me here?"

How Bluetooth proximity works

Bluetooth Low Energy lets phones sense each other over short distances without draining your battery or needing the internet for that first discovery. A proximity app uses this to show you a radar of nearby people — ranked by how close they are — instead of a feed of strangers from anywhere on earth.

When a room is crowded and Bluetooth alone can't tell two people apart, a good proximity app adds an in-person QR: you scan the exact person in front of you, so there's no guessing.

Why it's different (and safer by design)

Because the connection starts in person, a proximity app can be far more private than a search-based network. With Pinggg:
